WiFi channels 12–13 are only usable at low power in the US; outside the US they are commonly available. Zigbee 25 and 26 are the most common recommendations because they sit above the standard WiFi 1/6/11 pattern.
Frequently asked questions
Do Zigbee and WiFi really interfere with each other?
Yes. Zigbee and 2.4GHz WiFi share the same radio band. When a WiFi router is transmitting on an overlapping channel, it drowns out the low-power Zigbee radios, causing delayed responses and dropped devices. Moving one of them to a non-overlapping channel usually fixes it immediately.
Which Zigbee channel should I use?
Channel 25 is the safest default for most homes because it only overlaps WiFi channels 12–13, which almost no router uses. If your router is on channel 12 or 13, use Zigbee 15 or 20 instead. Most hubs let you change the channel in their app (e.g. Hue: Settings > Bridge > Zigbee channel).
Does Zigbee interfere with 5GHz WiFi?
No. Zigbee only uses the 2.4GHz band, so 5GHz WiFi networks are completely safe to run alongside Zigbee. If you have a dual-band router, the 2.4GHz band is the one to check here.
How do I change my Zigbee channel?
In your hub or bridge app, look under the hub settings for "Zigbee channel" (Hue: Settings > Bridge > Zigbee channel; most other hubs have an equivalent). Pick a channel that does not overlap your WiFi, then reboot the hub so the whole mesh moves over.
